The Montford Point Marines

In 1942, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued a presidential directive that made it possible for African-Americans to join the Marine Corps. Unlike white recruits, African-Americans were not sent to boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, or San Diego, California. Instead, they were sent to basic training at Montford Point, North Carolina. Marine veteran Lt. Col. Joseph Carpenter shares his story as a Montford Point Marine.
