NEW DELHI - India and Russia on Saturday signed three defense intergovernmental agreements for the purchase of S-400 Tiumf air defense systems and four stealth frigates, and the formation of a joint venture to manufacture Kampov-226T light utility helicopters in India.

The formal contracts and delivery schedule will be announced later.

During the bilateral meeting in Goa, the two sides did not make any announcement on leasing of nuclear submarines, new version of BrahMos cruise missile or joint development and production of a fifth generation fighter aircraft that have also reportedly been a part of discussions between the countries.

Under the proposed deals, India will buy five units of S-400 units of S-400 Tiumf air defense systems for the Air Force, four guided missile stealth frigates for the Navy and 200 Kamov-226T light utility helicopters for Army and the Air Force.

After signing the bilateral agreements, India Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "highly productive outcomes of the meeting clearly establish the special and privileged nature of strategic partnership between the two countries."

Modi further added: "They also lay the foundations for deeper defense and economic ties in years ahead. The agreements on manufacturing of Kamov 226T helicopters, constructions of frigates, and acquisition and building of other defense platforms are in synergy with India's technology and security priorities."

India hopes to sign the three defense deal within the next four to six months, a Ministry of Defense official said.

Russia is one of the primary military hardware supplier to India and constitutes nearly 50 percent of the armament inventory.
