The U.S. State Department has notified Congress of its approval for the potential foreign military sale for 40 2,000-pound GBU-10 and 84 500-pound GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs.
The two ships, RSS Sovereignty and RSS Unity, were inducted into the Republic of Singapore Navy at a ceremony Tuesday at RSS Singapura, one of the service’s two main bases.
Japan has announced it will participate in the U.S. Navy’s three-carrier strike force exercise in the Western Pacific, sending its own ships and aircraft to join the exercise.
China began construction of the base in March last year after it secured of a 10-year lease for what it had said will be a logistics support base used to resupply ships taking part in peacekeeping and humanitarian missions in the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea.
Indonesia’s procurement of the NASAMS will be done in stages, with more systems to be ordered in the future as it seeks to protect its capital Jakarta and other strategic cities and locations.
The transfer has been made possible by the recent revision to Japanese law, which had previously prohibited the government from disposal of defense assets without charge.
