The new purchases will maintain Italy’s submarine fleet total at eight – the number navy planners believe are needed to patrol the Mediterranean Sea. The $435 million deal is for 10 offshore patrol vessels based on upgraded versions of Saettia-class ships. Originally known as WASS, the torpedo unit saw €160 million in revenue last year.
