Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton announced Friday Canberra is seeking to buy up to 40 Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk battlefield helicopters to replace the Australian Defence Force’s fleet of NH Industry MRH 90 Taipan Multi Role Helicopters.
The Australian government has established a Future Nuclear Submarine Task Force which will work with U.K. and U.S. counterparts over the next twelve to eighteen months to determine the best way to acquire the boats.
A total of 211 vehicles will be acquired under the Australian Defence Force’s Project Land 400 Phase 2, valued at an estimated AU$5 billion (U.S. $3.3 billion). The first vehicle will be delivered in 2020.
The exercise was held with the full support of the South Australian state government and utilized two recently vacated hospital buildings, creating a realistic challenge during several different scenarios.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull launched Australia's long-awaited naval shipbuilding plan on May 16. The document will oversee construction of submarines, frigates and Offshore Patrol Vessels, costing A$89 billion (US $66.12 billion), in Australian shipyards.
