Marines looking for newer, lighter cold weather boot

The Marine Corps is looking to replace the antiquated extreme cold weather boot that Marines have worn since the Korean War.

Marines are still wearing cold weather boots that were designed in the 1940s, which need to be removed each night to avoid getting trench foot, said Col, Mike Manning of Marine Corps Systems Command.

“We’ve got to do more; we’ve got to get better and we got to get lighter,” Manning said Tuesday at the Marine Corps League’s annual Modern Day Marine expo in Quantico, Virginia.

Marine Corps officials will solicit ideas and proposals from the defense industry for a new, lighter cold weather boot, Manning said.

“We have talked with the Army, and yes, we have held multiple industry days. It’s something that we’ve still just not gotten a solution,” he said.

Manning declined to discuss a clear timeline of when MARCORSYSCOM would seek solicitations from industry for the new boot.
