Wargames To Assess Tac Air Needs, Industry
The U.S. Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics has asked defense companies to participate in a "wargame" in July to gauge the defense industry's ability to respond to operational needs in 2010 to 2020 for tactical aircraft, according to a request for information sent to companies from the Pentagon.
The wargame is set for late July, according to the document. That will follow an initial government-only wargame from June 10-13, in which government will assess tactical aircraft operational needs versus projected force structure and budgets. That session will involve senior leaders from Office of the Secretary of Defense, the armed services, the Joint Staff, the combatant commands and congressional staff.
"The games are designed to inform near-term decisions by better understanding the interaction between operational requirements and acquisition strategies; the business and budgetary environment; and the industrial base's strategies for proposing, designing and producing weapons systems to meet those requirements," the Pentagon said in the request for information sent to defense companies.
"There is concern in the Department of Defense that current TACAIR acquisition programs may be inadequate to respond to anticipated gaps in force structure during the 2010-2020 time period," the document said. "We request industries' inputs on ways to continue to produce TACAIR capability during that time period when budgets are anticipated to hold steady or decrease."
The second wargame with industry will include three fighter aircraft teams, one fighter engine team, one team representing suppliers and a team of Wall Street analysts. Using data from the requests for information, the Pentagon plans to subsequently issue a simulated request for proposal this month. The Pentagon will review responses to the request for proposal before the July wargame. Those responses "will form the basis for the stakeholder interactions during the game," according to the document.
