Gen. Paul Kern, USA
Army Gen. Paul Kern is commander, U.S. Army Materiel Command. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Gen. Kern earned master’s degrees in both mechanical and civil engineering from the University of Michigan, and was senior service college fellow at Harvard. Returning later to the Military Academy, he taught weapons systems and automotive engineering.
Beginning with service as an armor officer, he served two combat tours in Vietnam as a platoon leader and troop commander with the 11th Armored Cavalry, and had a third combat tour as commander of the 2nd Brigade, 24th Infantry Division during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Later in his career, he was commander, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), and senior military assistant to the secretary of defense and deputy secretary of defense.
Prior to his current assignment, he served as military deputy to the assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology and was the senior adviser to the Army acquisition executive and the Army chief of staff on all research, development and acquisition issues. He supervised the Program Executive Officer system, and served as the director of the Army Acquisition Corps.
