ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The new Army chief of staff has some revisions in mind for Transformation, starting with a few name changes.
Instead of the Objective Force, Gen. Peter Schoomaker wants the Army’s lighter, more responsive fighting forces for 2010 and beyond to be known as the Future Force, said Lt. Gen. John Riggs, director of the Objective Force Task Force.
During his presentation Sept. 23 to defense industry representatives at the Defense News Media Group conference “Force Projection 2003: Transformation & Rapid Reaction Warfare,” Riggs provided an overview of the need for Army Transformation if the force is going to be able to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s battlefield.
In an interview afterward, Riggs noted that Schoomaker “does describe [the before and after transformation forces] as the Current Force and the Future Force … so yes there are some terminology changes.” Riggs also provided a brief explanation of “the 15 areas that [Schoomaker] wants us to have an immediate focus on.”
Schoomaker’s proposed changes to the massive Army Transformation effort involve everything from the individual soldier to how future networks will be formed, Riggs said. Schoomaker has asked the senior leadership to give him feedback as well as offer new suggestions for the future of the Army.
“He has gone out to his [leadership] … and he has said, ‘Here’s what I am thinking about as an immediate focus area. How about giving me your thoughts and ideas?’ ” Riggs said. No specific changes will likely be made until November, he added.
“I think he is trying to make sure people understand that it’s not some far off futuristic thing we are focused in on,” Riggs said.
