Air Force Maj. Gen. Robert Behler, commander of the Air Force Command and Control and ISR Center, said Congress would look favorably on a new name for the Multi-sensor Command and Control Constellation.

RESTON, Va. — The Air Force is considering changing the name of the Multi-sensor Command and Control Constellation, one of the service’s new cornerstone initiatives, in order to reduce confusion in the service and Congress, according to Maj. Gen. Robert Behler.

“It’s confusing a lot of folks,” he said of the name, which is commonly shortened to MC2C.

Behler said the service would like to drop the old moniker and instead adopt the term “Command and Control Constellation,” which would more accurately portray the overall mission and capabilities of the concept. Calling the network “multi-sensor” is incredibly redundant, he added.

“I think C2 Constellation is much more consistent with what we’re trying to do,” said Behler, the commander of the Air Force Command and Control and ISR Center. “We think that we need to progress there.”

Behler was careful to point out that the switch has not been approved by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. John Jumper and is not official.

After his presentation, Behler told Defense News Media Group that the proposed change had received a positive response on Capitol Hill because it more accurately described the service’s overarching concept.

Before the change can become official, the service also needs to change the name of the program element that funds it, he told industry and military representatives at the ISR Integration Conference: “Shrinking the Sensor-to-Shooter Cycle.”

The Multi-sensor Command and Control Aircraft, a new wide-body aircraft that would host an array of surveillance sensors and is considered an important element of the constellation, would retain its tag, he said.
