RESTON, Va. The ability to gather information about an enemy and a battlefield not only will allow the U.S. military to conduct missions more effectively, but could also deter current and future enemies from attacking the United States and its interests abroad, the Air Forces chief requirements officer said Nov. 20.
Speaking at the Defense News Media Groups ISR Integration Conference: Shrinking the Sensor-to-Shooter Cycle, Air Force Maj. Gen. Daniel Leaf, director of operational requirements for the U.S. Air Force, told industry and military representatives that keeping a constant eye on the battlefield and using technology that allows the military to have efficient predictive analysis could prevent future conflicts.
Strategic and operational intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) requirements ideally will influence potential adversaries not to put that game jersey on that says Axis of Evil on the front, Leaf said. That is what we would like to do.
We would like our enemies to have the appreciation for the fact that we have such knowledge that its not worth it to challenge the United States, he said.
It will not be because we have overwhelming military power
but because we know, Leaf said. I want the enemy to have the same fear in their eyes that the German commanders did driving through France during World War II. Because we know. Thats what I want from ISR integration.
If, however, the enemy cannot be deterred, ISR integration will also decrease the time it takes to find, track and destroy targets. To be useful, such a network must be connected at all levels and in all functions. It should not matter whether the receiver of that information is a shooter, but that it is presented in a timely and useful manner, he said.
