Rep. Curt Weldon

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., is vice chairman of the House Armed Service Committee, and chairman of that committee’s tactical air and land forces panel. Previously, he served six years as chairman of the military research and development subcommittee, overseeing the development and testing of key military systems, weapons programs and technologies that fulfill military needs.

The congressman graduated in 1969 from West Chester (Pa.) University, where he majored in Russian studies. Before his election to Congress in 1987, he worked as an educator; a volunteer firefighter; mayor of his home town, Marcus Hook, Pa., and as a department head for a large corporation.

With his long-standing interest in Russia, Rep. Weldon has made improved relations with Russia one of his major efforts in the House. He has worked with Russian leaders on a variety of issues, including efforts to improve Russia’s energy supply, correct environmental damage, and protect both nations from ballistic missile attack. He is the founder of the Duma-Congress Study Group — a bilateral parliamentary exchange that helps coordinate legislative efforts in the Russian Duma and the Congress and fosters a better working relationship between the two nations.
