Col. Nathaniel H. Sledge Jr.

Col. Nathaniel H. Sledge Jr., project manager for Combat Ammunition Systems, earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1979, and was commissioned a second lieutenant of armor. He earned a master’s degree in engineering and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 and 1997, respectively. In addition, Sledge is a 1997 diplomate of the Advanced Program Manager’s Course at the Defense Systems Management College at Fort Belvoir, Va., and is a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College and the United States Army War College.

His early hands-on armor experience was as a tank platoon leader and company commander; subsequent assignments focused on research, development and evaluation of the Abrams tank and the Armored Gun System. Before assuming his current duties, he was with the Project Management Office for Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems in Warren, Mich., where he managed the development, testing and production of the Command and Control Vehicle, the Electronic Fighting Vehicle System, the M993 Multiple-Launched Rocket System Carrier, the Armored Medical Treatment Vehicle, and the Armored Medical Evacuation Vehicle.

Sledge serves on the University of Texas Department of Engineering Board of Visitors, has published and presented several professional papers, and is an award-winning essayist.
