Capt. Stephen Hancock

Capt. Stephen Hancock is head of the Naval Expeditionary Warfare Science & Technology Department in the Office of Naval Research and the program manager for Time Critical Strike Future Naval Capability.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Tech in 1980, he earned the surface warfare designator during four years afloat. He next reported for flight training (graduating first in his class), and then was trained as a radar intercept officer.

Among other assignments, he deployed twice to the Persian Gulf and flew the first tactical reconnaissance missions to photograph the surface-to-air missile sites being built by Iran in the Straits of Hormuz. He later deployed to the Mediterranean, where he served as the Carrier Battle Group representative to the Provide Comfort II effort in Incirlik, Turkey. He flew the first tactical reconnaissance missions for Bosnia.

In 1996, he was selected for transition to aerospace engineering duty officer and, assigned to Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, where he became aircraft material and engineering officer for all fleet and FRS Navy and Marine Corps aircraft on the East Coast.
