WELLINGTON — In a message to the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), Lt. Gen. Tim Keating, chief of the Defence Force, , appointed to the role in February, has set out his five priorities regarding the future direction of the NZDF.

■ Foremost is a single plan for the entire force, “focused on excellence and investing in smart capability. Further details will be made known later this year.”

■ A focus “on the delivery of core military skills.” The priority, Keating said, “must be the delivery of our front-line capabilities to ensure government is provided with military response options that lie at the heart of our national security.”

■ “Growing the people we need and better supporting our military families.” Alongside attracting and keeping personnel and reflecting the diversity of the community they are drawn from, Keating says his goal is for military families to feel better connected to the Defence Force.

■ “Greater partnering with other agencies and other militaries. A new Defence white paper in 2015 will likely reaffirm New Zealand’s strategic relationships in the context of subtle shifts in the balance of power since the last white paper [in 2010].”

■ Stronger leadership, including better governance and improved management to ensure “a pool of talented future leaders are available to meet the challenges of organizational leadership.”
