WASHINGTON — The US government cleared a $169 million sale of Boeing AGM-84L Harpoon missiles to Brazil, the Pentagon agency that coordinates foreign weapon sales said Tuesday.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress on May 6 that the State Department approved the sale.

Brazil requested 16 AGM-84L Harpoon Block II Missiles, four CATM-84L Harpoon Block II Captive Air Training Missiles, spares, training, logistics and support equipment, according to the DSCA notice.

“The proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of Brazil, which has been, and continues to be, an important force for regional stability and economic progress in South America,” the notice states.

The Brazilian Air Force is modernizing and upgrading the anti-surface warfare capability on its P-3 aircraft.

“The modernization will enhance the [service’s] P-3’s capabilities for its Counter-Transnational Organized Crime efforts, maritime border security, and protection of off-shore assets,” the DSCA notice states. ■
