VADM. Jan Tighe made history on April 2 after assuming command of the Navy's 10th Fleet/Fleet Cyber Command: She is the first woman to command a numbered fleet in U.S. Navy history.

Tighe is the third commander of Fleet Cyber Command, taking over for ADM Michael Rogers, who is now commander of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency.

"It is an honor to take command of this outstanding warfighting organization and to be able to continue working with the tremendous team of uniformed and civilian professionals," Tighe said at the Ft. Meade, Md., change-of-command ceremony, according to a Defense Department release.

Tighe will provide a keynote address at the C4ISR&Networks Conference in May.

Fleet Cyber Command was established in January 2010 as the service's subcomponent to U.S. Cyber Command, but the component's roots go much further back. The 10th Fleet originally was launched in May 1943 for anti-submarine warfare in World War II's Battle of the Atlantic, targeting German U-boats. After being deactivated at the end of the war, it was reactivated in 2010 with the launch of Fleet Cyber Command.

Tighe, nominated by President Barack Obama as commander in February, previously served as deputy commander since November 2013. Prior to that, she was the director of decision superiority on the Chief of Naval Operations staff in July 2011, after serving as the deputy director of Operations for U.S. Cyber Command. From November 2012 until October 2013, she additionally served as interim president of the Naval Postgraduate School, according to her Navy bio.
