Army tests WIN-T improvements

The U.S. Army is testing improvements that will make the Warfighter Information Network Tactical (WIN-T) Increment 2 system easier to use and more reliable.

The improvements, tested last month at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., were based on feedback from soldiers in Afghanistan and recommendations from recent Network Integration Evaluations, according to a General Dynamics C4 news release. It used 16 WIN-T Increment 2 mobile network nodes including the Soldier Network Extension (SNE) and Point of Presence (PoP) vehicles.

Improvements included reducing start-up time to five minutes from 12, and connecting to the radio gateway in second by clicking on a single pre-configured icon rather than multiple configuration steps. New software also allowed troubleshooting by ordinary users rather than specialists.

The next WIN-T Increment 2 development test is scheduled for June 2014, with a follow-on operational test at Network Integration Evaluation 15.2 in October and November 2014.
