WASHINGTON — The US Senate Armed Services Committee announced Tuesday that Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., will take over its AirLand subcommittee.

Blumenthal will immediately assume the gavel given up — due to Democratic caucus rules — by West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin. The subcommittee is responsibility for policy and budget oversight of the Pentagon’s air and ground forces, as well as its big-ticket programs like the F-35 fighter, a new long-range bomber and a slew of ground vehicle programs.

Connecticut is home to thousands of ground troops, as well as other US forces. The otherwise small state also is a shipbuilding powerhouse, home to Electric Boat shipyard.

Fighter jet engines, radars and helicopters, as well as other systems and components, currently are or have been built there. ■
