The Defense Department is hoping to achieve real-time analysis of big data involved in manufacturing through a $70 million cooperative agreement with a consortium of laboratories led by SCRA Applied R&D.

The arrangement, announced Feb. 26, is collectively called the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute. DoDís interest is in meeting its manufacturing needs with a more secure supply chain and for lower cost.

The federal investment for the DMDI Institute will be used to establish the Digital Lab for Manufacturing, led by UI LABS. Another $320 million for the lab is coming from industry, universities and other partners.
