Elizabeth McGrath, former deputy chief management officer at the Defense Department, has joined Deloitte as a director in its federal practice, the New York-based consulting firm announced Thursday.

McGrath, who retired from the Pentagon late last year after a 25-year career, will advise federal and commercial clients on strategies for innovation and improving their business operations, according to a news release.

“Her knowledge, experience and relationships will be instrumental in helping our federal and military clients achieve their mission goals as well as strengthen Deloitte’s deep capabilities in the federal marketplace,” said Janet Foutty, a Deloitte national managing director, in the release.

McGrath spent more than three years in the deputy CMO post. The first person to hold the congressionally created job, she came to the position after serving in a variety of financial management and other assignments at DoD. The post is now filled temporarily by Kevin Scheid, the assistant deputy chief management officer, according to the Pentagon. President Obama has not yet nominated a permanent replacement.

Under the administration’s ethics policy, McGrath could face a two-year “cooling off period” in her new job, under which she would not be allowed to contact or appear before her old DoD office, said Scott Amey, general counsel for the Project on Government Oversight.
