GE Intelligent Platforms has won an Air Force contract to provide advanced computers that operate at a speed of 20 teraflops, or 20 trillion floating point operations per second.
The contract, with the High Performance Systems Branch of the Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate, calls for a high-performance embedded computing system "that will enable the development and deployment of advanced neuromorphic architectures and algorithms for adaptive learning, large-scale dynamic data analytics and reasoning," according to the GE announcement.
The computer will support the Department of Defense's High Performance Computing Modernization Program. DoD plans to use it to develop next-generation radars such as the Gotcha wide-area synthetic aperture radar.
The rack-mounted HPEC system will comprise five SBC625 single board computers featuring quad core Intel Core i7 processors. It will also use Nvidia graphics processing unit accelerators.
