WARSAW — The Russian government has restricted imports of foreign-manufactured equipment and machinery for Russia’s defense companies. The measures came into force Jan. 1, and were drafted by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, the government said in a statement.

With its latest move, the government is aiming to promote purchases of locally made equivalents of the machines and other equipment that are imported by the country’s defense manufacturers.

“The resolution is expected to promote national economic development, provide additional support for domestic ... producers, protect the domestic market, and sustain national security and defense,” the statement said.

The resolution makes it “mandatory for [companies] ordering technological equipment to comply with the requirement” not to purchase foreign manufacturing equipment “for the needs of national defense and security” if a Russian-made equivalent exists, the statement said.

The restriction applies to goods manufactured abroad and services performed by foreign citizens for Russian defense firms.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade will be tasked with examining whether a given type of equipment and machinery is not locally produced and needs to be imported to Russia.
