WARSAW — Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov has announced plans by the ministry to sign a 7.9 billion ruble (US $241 million) contract with Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) to develop the Ilyushin Il-112w light transport aircraft. The deal will be inked in 2014, reported local news agency Interfax.

Research and development works will be performed by aircraft design and manufacturing company Ilyushin, a subsidiary of the UAC.

A second contract for deliveries of the aircraft will be awarded following the completion of the works, Borisov said. Deliveries of the aircraft to the Russian armed forces are scheduled to begin in 2017, according to the deputy minister.

Borisov did not specify how many aircraft will be ordered by the Russian ministry, saying that the amount could reach several dozen units. However, earlier this year Ilyushin’s press service announced that some 62 planes are to be produced under the program.

The Il-112w will be manufactured at the Voronezh aircraft plant. The new planes are to replace the Russian fleet of outdated Antonov An-26 aircraft.

The UAC is based in Moscow and was set up in 2006.
