Northrop Grumman Information Services has been awarded an $81 million contract option to modernize the US Air Force’s Air and Space Operations Centers (AOCs).

The option is for the engineering and manufacturing development phase of the AOC Weapon System project, for which the initial contract was awarded in March 2012. The Defense Department gave Milestone B approval to the project in October.

The AOC Weapon System project aims to deliver a common computing environment to reduce manual information sharing between information systems, as well as more quickly integrate new applications. The critical design review will be completed next year, along with workshops to obtain feedback from users.

“Northrop Grumman is applying an open systems approach and integrating cybersecurity to modernize the Air Force’s essential operational-level command and control centers,” the company said in a Dec. 3 announcement. “The effort will deliver greater C2 affordability over the life cycle and enable more effective, dynamic planning and execution.”
