PARIS — Renault Trucks Defense has removed Gérard Amiel from the chief executive post, with Stefano Chiemlewski, president of Volvo government sales, taking charge of RTD, an industry source said.

RTD is a subsidiary of the Swedish Volvo group.

Alleged management mistakes that brought excessive risk lay behind the decision, the source said.

RTD was not available for comment. Total sales of RTD and its Acmat and Panhard units were expected to exceed €400 million (US $537.7 million) for 2012.

RTD announced last year a plan to build an assembly line for a Mark 3 version of the Véhicule Avant Blindé, a troop carrier, for export markets.

Chiemlewski effectively relaunched the military side when he headed commercial vehicle maker Renault Trucks in 2012, the source said.

The government is expected to launch by the end of the year a tender for an armored Véhicule Blindé Multirole to replace three aging products. Given the tough budget climate, a selection of the VBMR, expected at the end of 2014, will likely slip a year, the source said.

Newsletter TTU reported Amiel’s departure Nov. 20.
