Piaggio Aero’s P.1HH HammerHead technology demonstrator UAV has performed its maiden flight.

The UAV took off from the Trapani Italian Air Force base Nov. 14, and flew for 12 minutes over the Mediterranean at an altitude of 2,000 feet and a speed of 170 knots.

The P.1HH is designed to fly at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet for 16 hours. It is a derivative of Piaggio Aero’s P.180 Avanti II manned ISR aircraft, with an enhanced airframe and reinforced wings.

“The success of the first flight test of the P.1HH brings us closer to providing the first European developed state of the art MALE [medium-altitude long-endurance] UAS, capable of performing at the highest technological level for aerial, land, coastal, maritime, offshore, COMINT/ELINT and electronic warfare missions ” said Piaggio Aero CEO Alberto Galassi.
