Three Northrop Grumman UAV and satellite projects have won Program Excellence awards from Aviation Week magazine. The awards were announced at the magazine’s 10th Annual Aerospace and Defense Programs conference in Phoenix.

Northrop Grumman’s X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration (UCAS-D) snagged an award in the System Research and Development/System Development and Demonstration category. The Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications satellite project won in the Subsystem Research and Development/System Development and Demonstration category.

“Program managers overcame especially complex technical challenges in designing and producing the most sophisticated military or commercial satellite communication payload ever produced,” a Northrop Grumman news release stated.

The Space Tracking and Surveillance System Demonstration (STSS-D) won in the special projects category. “Enhancements transformed this pair of missile tracking satellites from an experiment into a near-operational system, allowing the pair of satellites to take on additional missions,” according to Northrop Grumman.
