Astrium has delivered new X-band satellite communication terminals to the U.K. Ministry of Defence. They will be allocated to the various services, with 25 of the terminals going to land forces. In addition, two will go to small Royal Navy ships.
The terminals will use Astrium’s X-band satellites through the Skynet 5 program and will draw on the company’s new IP core-based infrastructure, according to an Astrium announcement.
The land forces will get Mantis terminals and lightweight Snapper baseband equipment. The Navy will get DMM (Deployable Maritime Milsat) SCOTPatrol terminals, “which feature reduced top-weight and a compact footprint both above and below deck for easier integration on small vessels,” Astrium said. “These terminals will enable IP-based communication onboard smaller Royal Navy ships, including Mine Counter Measure Vessels on operations in the Arabian Gulf.”
