L-3 Global Communications Solutions has obtained the first I-5 Type Approvals from Inmarsat for its Ka-band Panther and Hawkeye series of very small aperture terminals. In 2012, L-3 GCS was named a satellite land terminal manufacturing partner for Inmarsat’s Global Xpress (GX) service.

“Having already received ARSTRAT [Army Strategic Forces Command] certification for Wideband Global SATCOM, our Panther and Hawkeye Ka-Band VSATs were easily transitioned to Type Approval by Inmarsat’s technical team,” Bill Harrington, vice president of engineering and L-3 lead for Inmarsat GX programs, said in a news release.

Scheduled for service introduction in 2014, the Global Xpress satellite network aligns with the trend by governments worldwide to shift operations to Ka-band and will provide superfast uplink and downlink data rates, L-3 said.
