More than 12,000 email users in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Southern Command are now using the Pentagon’s enterprise email system.

This is in addition to the 1.4 million Army users already receiving enterprise email capabilities provided by the Defense Information Systems Agency, DISA announced this week. DISA said enterprise email can scale to support more than 4.5 million DoD users.

The migration included more than 10,000 OSD staff email accounts and 2,000 SOUTHCOM accounts.

This comes on the heels of a Sept. 5 memo from DoD Chief Information Officer Teri Takai directing all DoD components to migrate to the Defense Enterprise Email system. Takai gave defense organizations until January to develop a plan for making the switch.

She directed all components and commands to identify existing email capabilities and move them to the DoD-wide system no later than the first quarter of fiscal 2015.
