Advanced Measurement and Signals Intelligence Exploitation (MASINT) techniques are the goal of an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) research project. MASINT-X seeks innovative ideas in five aspects of MASINT:
■Electro-optical, including laser intelligence (LASINT),overhead non-imaging infrared, Thermal IR, and spectroscopy.
“LASINT technologies may also include sensitive and specific methods of identifying and diagnosing laser eye injuries,” notes the AFRL announcement.
■Radar, including synthetic aperture radar (SAR), inverse SAR, line of sight, over the Horizon and bi-static radar.
■Detection technologies for nuclear and biological materials
■Radio frequency collection and exploitation, including ultra wideband, electromagnetic pulse, high power microwave and unintended RF emissions.
■Geophysical surveillance that uses seismic, magnetic, acoustic, hydro-acoustic or multi-disciplinary approaches.
MASINT-X technologies must be able to interface with processing systems such as Distributed Common Ground Systems, Defense Information & Intelligence Enterprise and Multimedia Analysis & Archive System. (MAAS). The $50 million project will end in fiscal 2016.
