The U.S. military began experimenting with radio-controlled aircraft nearly a century ago, primarily as aerial targets, and by the 1950s UAVs were being fitted with cameras for reconnaissance missions. The deployment and variety of UAVs mushroomed in the 21st century as industry developed new systems to meet urgent wartime needs in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Here is a look the unmanned aircraft flown by the military today.
