WARSAW — The Russian Defense Ministry has postponed the planned acquisition of 37 MiG-35 jet fighters, reported local daily Kommersant.

The aircraft, produced by military aviation manufacturer Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RSK MiG), were expected to be purchased this year, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2014.

However, the Russian military is now planning to place an order for the jet fighters in 2016, according to information obtained by Kommersant. The number of aircraft to be procured will not change, the daily was told by an unnamed source from the Russian Defense Ministry. The procurement is expected to be worth some 37 billion rubles (US $1.12 billion).

In June, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said planned defense spending of as much as 100 billion rubles could be postponed until 2016, following a proposal made by the Ministry of Finance.

Headquartered in Moscow, RSK MiG is part of the United Aircraft Corporation group. For 2013, the group expects revenues of about 11.5 billion rubles to 12 billion rubles, United Aircraft Corporation said in a statement.
