WASHINGTON — The Air Forces sixth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) unit successfully launched Wednesday night, the second successful WGS launch in 2013.

The Boeing-built WGS-6 was launched at 8:29 Wednesday evening from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The satellite is carried by a United Launch Alliance Delta IV launch vehicle.

The WGS program will boost wideband satellite communications coverage for US and international partners, including Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia, the latter of which provided funding for the sixth satellite. WGS-5 was launched earlier this year.

WGS is a vital piece of the MILSATCOM enterprise consisting of WGS, DSCS, AEHF, Milstar and terminals, Charlotte Gerhart, Chief of the Wideband SATCOM Division at Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, said in a statement. The continued success of WGS is due to the hard work and dedication from the combined Government and Boeing team.

The satellite will go through several months of testing before becoming operational.
