In the past three days, Cubic Corporation has announced contracts from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps worth more than $45 million — huge prizes for a tight market in danger of budget cuts.

The Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division awarded two $15 million contracts for instructor-led and instructor-facilitated courseware to train ship engineers on the Littoral Combat Ships. Experts designing training for the new Littoral Combat Ships are working hard to incorporate the best of simulation and teaching tools — and this includes self-paced courseware for ship engineers that allow them to train with more freedom and on a schedule tailored to the individual’s skills.

The deputy manager of Cubic Advanced Learning Solutions, a business unit within the company that will lead the project, called the contract “an evolution of adult learning in a synthetic environment.”

The Marine Corps also awarded a $17.4 million contract to a different subset of the company, Cubic Defense Applications. The additional delivery order is for the Instrumented-Tactical Engagement Simulation System (I-TESS II), which will replace similar older systems at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

I-TESS II is a ground combat training system that includes small arms laser transmitters, rocket-propelled grenade simulators, portable command and control systems to track participant data and create after action reviews, and man-worn detection systems that alert Marines when they are hit. There are also tracking components for vehicles, so the system can be used for maneuvers outdoors as well as inside in MOUT facilities.
