WARSAW — Fifteen defense manufacturers have applied to participate in a technical dialogue with the Polish Ministry of Defense on the planned procurement of three coastal defense vessels and three patrol vessels with a mine-destroying capacity, the ministry said in a statement.

“Technical dialogs with particular companies will allow to collect information which will be useful for the process of preparing the vessel procurements,” the statement said.

Under the Armed Forces’ Technical Modernization Plan, the Polish Navy is to acquire three coastal defense vessels from 2014 to 2026 and three patrol vessels with a mine-destroying capacity from 2015 to 2026. The procurements will be part of Poland’s 10 billion zloty (US $3.1 billion) Navy modernization strategy.

The manufacturers that expressed interest include six Western European and nine Poland-based entities.

According to a report in the local news weekly Polska Zbrojna, the first group comprises Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, France’s DCNS, Norway’s Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, Spain’s Indra, and Dutch-based companies Thales Nederland and Damen Shipyards.

The second group consists of Poland-based manufacturers and local representatives of foreign defense players. These include the Remontowa shipyard, Naval Shipyard Gdynia, Polish Defence Holding (former Bumar Group), OBR CTM research center, KenBIT, Rolls-Royce Poland, Unitronex Poland, which represents U.S. ITT Exelis, ELSE Technical and Research Service, representing the U.K.’s Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine, and Thales Poland.

With the exception of Unitronex Poland, which is solely interested in the patrol vessels procurement, all manufacturers expressed interest in both Polish vessel tenders.
