TAMPA, FLA. — Probably the most celebrated US special forces component serving in Afghanistan, at least in the movies and in growing stacks of paperback books, will see its presence in Afghanistan at least cut in half by December, as the United States continues to draw down the war.
“Our SEALS have been fighting two land wars for the last decade, and there’s plenty of work back in the maritime environment” Rear Adm. Sean Pybus, head of the Navy’s Special Operations Command, said today.
“By Christmas we’ll at least cut in half” the number of SEAL platoons in Afghanistan, he told the assembled industry representatives, explaining that “they’ll be turned to the waters of the Pacific,” as well as conduct operations in the Mediterranean, the Gulf of Guinea and the Persian Gulf.
