RIYADH — Saudi King Abdullah has dismissed and retired air force chief Gen. Mohammed al-Ayesh by royal decree, the official SPA news agency reported Friday, without elaborating on why.

The monarch named Gen. Fayadh bin Hamed al-Rowaili to succeed him, the agency added.

In April, the deputy defense minister, Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz, a member of the royal family who played a key role in the 1991 Gulf War over Kuwait, was also dismissed by royal decree.

Again, no explanation was given for the move.
