Bohemia Interactive Acquires TerraSim

Bohemia Interactive Simulations, developer of the ubiquitous tactical shooter Virtual Battlespace 2, has acquired TerraSim, maker of terrain software TerraTools.

Bohemia Interactive CEO Peter Morrison noted that many VBS2 users already use TerraTools to create terrain in VBS2.

"The primary purpose of this acquisition is to improve the integration between VBS2 and TerraSim products such as TerraTools and MaterialMap." He declined to specify the purchase price.

Bohemia plans to use TerraTools components to speed up VBS2 terrain generation, according to Morrison. An important addition will be improved support for procedural generation of terrain, which means automated creation of terrain and destructible infrastructure such as buildings, bridges and tunnels. This alleviates the laborious task of manually generating terrain.

Bohemia will also incorporate TerraSim's work on pattern of life annotations, which is "a form of metadata added to procedurally generated terrain that can be used by AI to more realistically navigate around the virtual environment," Morrison said. "For example, automatically tagging buildings to have a specific type, such as bus stops, office blocks, or mosques, so that AI pattern of life can be more easily simulated."

TerraSim products are already used by the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, Lockheed Martin, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and others. Besides VBS2, they are used in constructive simulations such as JCATS, OneSAF, Warsim, JSAF, and VR Forces. VBS2 is the U.S. Army's flagship tactical shooter, and is used by militaries around the world.
