Abu Dhabi — The United Arab Emirates placed orders totaling 4 billion dirhams ($1 billion), including technical support for the French-built Leclerc heavy tank, a spokesman for the International Defense Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) trade show said Feb. 20.
A local company, Hydra Trading, won the service contract, which includes support for the Leclerc, Russian BMP-3 armored vehicle, mortars and other equipment, Maj. Gen. Obaid Al Ketbi told a press conference.
The latest deals bring the total to 14.1 billion dirhams announced at the show, which opened Feb. 17.
Among the latest orders announced were a 143 million dirham overhaul of Panther helicopters by Advanced Military Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Center, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin, Mubadala Aerospace and Sikorsky; Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei will supply anti-torpedo gear worth 28 million dirhams for the Abu Dhabi class of corvettes; Lockheed Martin will supply ground support equipment worth 134.4 million.
The IDEX show closes Feb. 21.
