The U.S. Air Force awarded a contract to L-3 Communications to build two F-16 Block 52 Full Mission Trainers for the Iraqi Air Force, the company announced today.

L-3 would not release the value of the contract for “competitive reasons,” spokesman Rick Oyler said. The Air Force announcement was not immediately available due to the federal holiday.

L-3 Link Simulation and Training division will build the FMTs at L-3’s Arlington, Texas, facility. Features will include high-definition databases, image generators, and physics-based environments that have become hallmarks of full mission trainers. The FMTs are part of the HD World product line.

The simulators will include geo-specific databases of Iraq terrain. Pilots will use a Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System, which provides flight information during fighter training when pilots practice using aircraft controls, sensors, and systems.

Iraq marks the 11th international customer for F-16 training systems.
