As Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the northeast United States, its residual effects have forced organizers to cancel one of the largest military electronics conferences.

The annual MILCOM conference was scheduled to begin Oct. 29 in Orlando, Fla., however, organizers chose to cancel the show after determining nearly half of the attendees would not be able to travel south because of flight cancellations.

“After careful analysis of the attendee list, we have determined that approximately 40 [percent] would be traveling from the impacted areas and would be prevented or unreasonably delayed from attending the event,” MILCOM said in an email to attendees.

The conference, co-sponsored by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) and The IEEE Communications Society, is a technical symposium. Last year, nearly 6,000 people attended and exhibited at the event, which was held in Baltimore. More than 250 companies panned to exhibit at this year’s show.

The event will not be rescheduled, according to Tobey Jackson, a spokeswoman for AFCEA. Attendees can email milcom@afcea.org for refund and other information.
