ROME — Two Italian-built armored vehicles arrived in Russia in August for trials ahead of a possible Russian purchase, an Italian industrial official said.
A Centauro wheeled tank with a 120mm gun was delivered alongside a Freccia armored vehicle with a 30mm gun. The arrivals follow the delivery this year of a Centauro with a 105mm gun and a Freccia with a 25mm gun. All vehicles are manufactured by a consortium of Italian vehicle maker Iveco and Finmeccanica unit Oto Melara.
The source said none of the vehicles has started trials. First trials, at a test site near Moscow, are expected to start in mid-September and conclude in March, he said.
The Centauro tanks to be tested are the current model rather than the upgraded version, which the Italian Army is set to purchase, the source added.
