John Jumper, who spent four years as the Air Force chief of staff, will be taking the reins at SAIC beginning in March, the company announced Feb. 21.
Jumper will succeed Walt Havenstein, who announced his impending retirement in October after two years as chief executive officer.
“It is humbling to be succeeded by such a capable, talented and dedicated leader as John Jumper,” Havenstein said in a company press release.
A former fighter pilot who served tours over Southeast Asia, Jumper joined the SAIC board of directors in 2007.
“I am honored to have been selected to lead SAIC and am keen to face the challenges ahead in our industry,” he said in the release.
Jumper stepped down as Air Force Chief of Staff in November 2005, and has served as an adviser to the Carlyle group and on the boards of Goodrich, Jacobs Engineering and Somanetics since he joined the private sector.
SAIC, the world’s 12th largest defense company by defense revenue, is headquartered in McLean, Va., and employs about 41,000 people worldwide.
