U.S. President Barack Obama will nominate Katrina McFarland to be the assistant secretary of defense for acquisition.

McFarland, who is the president of Defense Acquisition University, has been performing the duties of the assistant secretary of defense for acquisition since October.

The assistant secretary for acquisition provides oversight and policy direction on the DoD acquisition system and major weapon programs. The secretary also oversees Defense Acquisition University and the Defense Contract Management Agency.

McFarland has served as the president of Defense Acquisition University since December 2010. She succeeds Ashton Carter, confirmed in September as deputy defense secretary.
